A Brief History of Dining Out in America
The oldest eating establishment in America that still operates today is the White Horse Tavern in Newport, Rhode Island. Established in 1673, it was similar to most other taverns of the day. It served meals, provided lodging, and the local government used it as a meeting place for assemblies and courts.
In the 19th century, Americans began to travel more due to advancements in railroads and steamships. Increased travel meant a need for more restaurants to feed hungry travelers. The first upscale dining establishment opened in New York City in 1837. Delmonico’s featured tablecloths and a gourmet menu. Still, most Americans ate at home.
This would soon change as the automobile became popular. The first drive-in opened in 1921 in Texas with carhops serving customers. Soon, other fast-food eateries appeared, such as Sonic and McDonalds. A shift in demographics occurred in 1965 changing the way most families ate dinner. It was then that the number of wives entering the workforce increased sharply. From 1965 to 1988, the number increased by 20%. With both parents working and stressed for time, eating out became even more popular.
The Dining Out Experience
While it’s true many Americans eat out for convenience, there are many other reasons for dining out. Some people simply like having someone else cook and clean up after them. After a long day at work, many families just want to relax. Cooking a meal at home requires preparation and cleanup time. Thus, having someone else cook your dinner saves you time and energy.
Another reason Americans like to dine out is to celebrate special occasions. Restaurants offer an atmosphere that you can’t replicate at home. Plus, you have a full menu of appetizer, salad, soup, main entree, dessert, and coffee. Often there’s a new dish you’ve never tried before. Moreover, eating out is a fun experience.
While consumers love dining out, they’re also choosing to order in more often too. The pandemic has changed our dining habits to include more curbside pickup and food delivery. Restaurants now offer apps to make it easy for guests to order and pay for food with their smartphone. It’s no surprise that the use of third-party home delivery services like DoorDash is on the rise. Our Winston Salem restaurant, along with our locations in Greensboro, offers your choice of dining options. Additionally, all of our restaurants have a full bar.
Often, consumers choose their restaurant based on food quality, ambiance, and service. Menu variety and convenient location are other considerations affecting consumers’ choice. However, offering a coupon or special deal can also influence a diner’s decision.
The Winston Salem Area Has A Wide Variety of Restaurants
America is a land of diverse people. Each nationality settling here brought unique food choices with them. Often, particular immigrants settled together to support each other. Thus, cities developed their own culinary specialty. For example, Louisiana is known for its Cajun seafood cooking. Settled in the 1700s by French Canadian immigrants, New Orleans holds the #1 spot for seafood restaurant visits by patrons.
The Moravians carved a settlement from the North Carolina wilderness in 1753. These German Protestants were seeking a place to practice their religion in peace. From those humble beginnings, the city of Winston Salem rose. Today, residents and visitors seek out restaurants in Winston Salem for its Moravian sugar cakes, cookies, chicken pies, and other German-style foods.
Over the years, other immigrants arrived in the area bringing with them their recipes and dishes. Today, Winston Salem is home to a wide variety of restaurants ranging in style and taste. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, casual dining, or fine dining, the city has it all.
Mexican, Italian, and French restaurants are some of your dining options. And even though Winston Salem isn’t located along the coast, you can also find great seafood. But not just any type of seafood. Crazy Crab brings you dishes that originated in Louisiana, and along the southeastern coast up to North Carolina. The unique presentation of our food and the fun atmosphere that we create to make your meal a true dining experience, have raised the bar for casual restaurants. Our specialty is a tasty, hearty, seafood boil. We offer many choices that are up to each person, including the ingredients, type of sauce and level of spicy flavor. If you don’t just dig in, you’re missing some of the fun!
Enjoy One of the Best Seafood Boils You Will Find West of the Coast!
Although there are many variations of the seafood boil along any U.S. coast, our boil recipe originates with the Cajuns. A group of exiled French Canadians, the Cajuns settled in the swampy, rural areas just west of New Orleans. Converting their traditional recipes to the ingredients of the area, a unique style of cooking developed. One of their dishes is the seafood boil.
Our boil starts traditionally with corn on the cob and red potato. For a small charge, you can add sausage, egg, or extra corn or potato. Next, choose your seafood. We have several combinations or you can build your own. Seafood choices include traditional Cajun fare like crawfish, Blue crab, shrimp, and oysters. Additionally, we have lobster tail, clams, black and green mussels, King, Snow, and Dungeness crab legs.
Then, choose your sauce flavoring. Our choices include garlic butter, lemon pepper, Old Bay, or Cajun. Prefer something a little less zesty? We can also serve your boil steamed or with butter. If you’re feeling adventurous, we can mix it all in for a truly unique taste. Finally, choose your spice level. From non-spicy to extra hot, we have several levels to meet all preferences.
Our visitors enjoy not only our food, but the entire dining experience. Read some of the reviews from recent patrons.
