Is there a Difference between Low Country Boils and Seafood Boils?
Seafood boils are a common name for one-pot seafood meals typically served along the coastal regions of the US. From area to area, boils vary by the types of seafood, side dishes, and preparation. Whether you steam, boil, or bake, use Old Bay Seasoning, beer, or lemons, seafood is always the main ingredient.
Low country boils, in particular, originated in a specific area in South Carolina. Sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Savannah River, the low country consists of 4 counties, Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton. Local folklore attributes a National Guardsman, Richard Gray, with the recipe. However, an earlier version probably arrived with the Cajuns in the 1800s. Nevertheless, whichever seasonings you use in your boil, one thing is certain, it’s a tantalizing taste of seafood.
Crazy Crab’s Version of a Low Country Boil

Eggs readily absorb our savory cooking sauce adding a flavorful touch. Next, choose your seafood from our many different choices. Our offerings include 5 scrumptious combinations.
Feeling a bit more adventurous and want to build your own combo? Our seafood choices include King Crab legs, Dungeness Crab legs, Snow Crab legs as well as Blue crab. We also have lobster, oysters, clams, shrimp, and black or green mussels. Or for truly southern fare, how about crawfish?

We also Serve Fried Seafood and Fish Dishes
While low country boils are our specialty, we also excel at fried seafood platters. We traveled extensively seeking the best way to fry fish. Types of oils, frying temperature, and technique all affect the final product. Cooking the right way is the difference between juicy, crispy seafood or soggy overdone leathery fish.
Currently, we’re serving several different fried platters at both our Greensboro restaurant locations. We have fried catfish, shrimp, or oysters if you’re a seafood lover. Or, if you prefer, we also offer fried chicken tenders. Our fried platters are moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside, just the way you like it. Crispy French fries complete the meal. If you prefer something lighter to accompany your fried dish, a side salad is just the thing.
What Is a Hush Puppy?
Those delightful crispy treats known as hush puppies are a true southern specialty. Adding to their charm is the mystery of the hush puppy origin. There are several legends regarding their inventor and their name. Some credit an African American slave, while others claim hunters cooked them up to feed their dogs. All the tales make for interesting folklore, but all your taste buds care about is their warm doughy goodness.
Often an accompaniment to fried fish, your basic hush puppy recipe includes just three ingredients, cornmeal, egg, and water. Sometimes, chefs may add spices and other ingredients including garlic and peppers. Hush puppies can be sweet or savory. And while the ingredients may be simple, there are certain techniques to creating the perfectly fried cornmeal.
First, never over mix which can lead to tough hush puppies. Second, maintain a steady temperature throughout the frying process. Soggy hush puppies are most likely the result of oil that is not hot enough. Or, easiest of all is to order a batch from Crazy Crab Seafood & Grill. Right now, you can get some free with any dinner order. Just use the promo code “BESTBOIL” at checkout and we’ll include an order with some homemade honey butter.
Our Crab Cakes Are Delightful!
Often when people think of the Blue crab, they think of Maryland. Found in plentiful supply In the Chesapeake Bay, the Blue crab is the focal point of many meals. However, the blue crab also thrives in the Gulf of Mexico. In fact, about 26% of the Blue crab population lives off the Louisiana coast.
The Blue crabs’ prominent sapphire-tinted claws make them easily distinguishable from other species. While other types of crab also inhabit the gulf waters, the Blue crabs’ sweet, tender meat makes it a favorite. Typically, about 4 inches long, adult Blue crabs weigh between 1-2 pounds.
Crab cakes are one of diners’ favorite ways to enjoy the taste of crab. Thought to originate with colonists in the 1700s, the seasonings may vary from region to region, but the basics remain the same. You need crab meat and some binding ingredients to keep the cake together while providing some flavor. Egg and mayonnaise are popular binders. Spices vary depending on region ranging from Old Bay seasoning to Cajun.
At Crazy Crab Seafood & Grill, we’ve perfected the Louisiana style crab cake. We start with the freshest Blue crab available. Then we add egg, celery, onion, and panko crumbs for a satisfying crunch. Your choice of one side item such as French fries, green beans, or corn on the cob completes the meal.
Just the Crab Legs?
Many seafood restaurants serve 4 popular types of crab: Blue, King, Snow, and Dungeness. Generally, most crab houses serve Blue crab whole. While restaurants may offer Dungeness crab either whole or just legs. Yet, many menu offerings feature only the legs of the King and Snow crab. Regardless, there’s no real mystery as to why diners prefer certain parts of the crab.
The bodies of the King and Snow crabs are also edible. However, the leg meat on a crab is more flavorful and has a better texture. Often, there’s less meat in the body. Plus, it’s easier to remove the meat from the legs than the cartilage-lined channels of the body. Thus, if the crab is a large one like King and Snow, you’ll be chowing down on only the legs.
For Those Who Prefer Hamburgers and Chicken Wings
Some of the members of your household may not appreciate delectable seafood, fish and shellfish. We understand that. For those diners, we are currently serving crispy chicken wings and several kinds of juicy hamburgers.
Our chicken wings are always fresh, never frozen. Choose your preference, naked, breaded, or grilled, cooked just the way you like them. Perfected in our own special sauces, our wings are sure to be a hit.
Juicy, too-big-for-your-mouth hamburgers are also our specialty. And we serve several different kinds – guaranteed to make your mouth water. First, we start with the basics, delicious beef, and nestle it on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. If you enjoy a classic burger, we’ll top it with American cheese. Prefer something a little more exotic? We can top it with bleu cheese, mushrooms and Swiss cheese, or bourbon barbecue sauce. Finish the meal with some great fries and you’re all set. If you prefer, choose a salad on the side.
